Dr Rohit K Dasgupta

Associate Professor of Gender and Sexuality
London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE)

I am an incoming Associate Professor of Gender and Sexuality at the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE). Prior to this, I served as a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Industries at the University of Glasgow, where I convened the MSc programme in Creative Industries and Cultural Policy. Before my tenure at Glasgow, I was a Senior Lecturer in Global Communication and Development at Loughborough University, where I continue to serve as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Media and Creative Industries. 

I have held a number of prestigious Visiting Fellowships including serving as Senior Visiting Fellow in Sociology at LSE; Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Research in Global Communication in University of Pennsylvania and McGannon Fellow at Fordham University New York.

As an ethnographer my work cuts across several disciplines with particular interests in communication and social change, cultural industries, protest culture, queer politics and South Asia.I am currently working on several projects on queer migration, media and nation in India, film festivals as community making and cultural labour.


I am also currently a Labour and Cooperative Party Councillor in the London Borough of Newham. I was first elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. I served as Commissioner for Social Integration and Equalities from 2019 until 2022. I was appointed Deputy Cabinet Member for Social Justice and Culture in 2023. I was the Labour Party parliamentary candidate for East Hampshire in 2017 and also a Labour Party MEP Candidate for South East England in 2019.
